A quick guide to Protein Powder

What is whey protein?

Whey Protein (derived from dairy), is essential for the body, forming one of the three macronutrients (alongside fats and carbohydrates), and contributes largely to your daily calorie needs.

Whey protein is a “complete protein” that is fast and easy to digest. Any good protein will consist of 9 essential amino acids (BCAA’s) which help to repair our muscles and ensure a faster recovery.  We can also get proteins from foods like meats, dairy, eggs and rare vegetable proteins such as quinoa , but sometimes we need to supplement our food with whey protein in order to build lean muscle.

Why do we use protein powder?

While no supplement can replace a diet of whole, natural, unprocessed foods, whey protein can be useful for people with a very busy, on-the-go lifestyle as a supplement to their normal diet.

Whey protein has the following benefits:

  • Weight loss (with the correct diet plan in place).
  • Fast protein absorption after training
  • Regulating metabolism
  • Help gain muscle mass
  • Strengthening your immune system
  • Decreased recovery time and symptoms of overtraining.

What are branched chain amino acids?

Whey protein is high in Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAA’s), that are of special importance for muscle repair and preservation. 3 of these 9 essential amino acids are Leucine, Isoleucine, and Valine. Your body will naturally breakdown muscle to in order to get those BCAA’S, by taking a BCAA supplement, your body preserves your muscle, while the specific amino acid leucine actually stimulates protein synthesis.

What is the best Whey Protein?

Whey protein Isolate (WPI) is commonly known for being the best type of protein. It is easily digested and can contain most of the immunoglobulins, which the whey protein hydrolysate is typically lacking due to the extreme processing it goes through.
